Born in Detroit and raised in Southfield, Shelley M. Fiore has financial services running through her veins. Shelley chose to build a career in the financial services industry nearly three decades ago because it offered her an opportunity to achieve professionalism without a glass ceiling. And, it ultimately gave her the ability to help thousands of Detroit area men and women.
Shelley’s primary knowledge is in business continuity planning, fringe benefits, tax reduction strategies, investment planning and estate planning. But as a mother of three, Shelley also pursues her career in a way that not only helps Michigan families and businesses succeed, but continues to look for ways to lift other women into an industry that has offered her both professional fulfillment and flexibility as a working mother.
Shelley was appointed last year to jointly lead MassMutual Michigan Metro, a Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company general agency. One of three female field executives at the Fortune 500* financial services company, Shelley defines her leadership mission by creating opportunities and recruiting Detroit women to financial services because of the increasingly important roles women are playing in the local and national economy.
Shelley believes it is critical to build the ranks of women financial service professionals who share the female consumer’s experiences in order to ensure all women live their best lives. Often the lone woman in the room, Shelley made a decision to accept her leadership role at MassMutual Michigan Metro in 2010 so she could support other women in their effort to earn a living without a ceiling.
Her record as a champion for women in financial services began even earlier. In 2008, Shelley became the first female president of MassMutual’s over 100-year-old Agents Association. She is a consistent top performer among the company’s 5,000 plus sales professionals. Shelley further spearheaded a culture-change initiative, called “Bridging the Understanding Gap,” to build greater understanding between MassMutual home-office employees and its agents, which remains in place today.
Frequently quoted as an expert in gender and equality issues in the financial services industry, Shelley and her work was most recently featured in a cover story in Life Insurance Selling Magazine and National Underwriter.
